Volleyball Scoreboard Buying Guide: What to Check Before You Buy

Main guide: Volleyball scoreboard guide

In this guide
Buying a volleyball scoreboard is less about hardware than it used to be. Multi Score Screen runs on TVs a club or school already owns, so the real questions are about the software and the hall: does it handle volleyball's set rules, can the whole crowd read it, can a volunteer scorer keep up, will it run a tournament on several courts, and what does each court cost?

Start with how your courts are used
For each court, note a normal week:
- League fixtures at home.
- Youth training and school sessions.
- Adult training and recreational play.
- Tournaments and cup days.
- Bookings from other sports or groups.
- Beach courts in summer, if you have them.
Courts that host league matches and events need the most from a scoreboard; training courts mostly need a visible score and quick resets.
The checklist
| Question | Why it matters in volleyball | What Multi Score Screen does |
|---|---|---|
| Does it apply volleyball scoring? | 24-24 and the deciding set confuse people | Sets to 25 with a two-point margin, deciding set to 15 |
| Beach formats? | Clubs often run summer beach events | Sets to 21, deciding set to 15 |
| Does it show the serve? | The bench and crowd want to know | Serve indicator on screen |
| Team identity? | Two teams in similar kit | Team names and colours on Pro, Elite, Unlimited |
| Is scoring fast enough? | Volunteers score while watching | One tap per rally on a phone |
| Can the official scorer use it? | League and official matches | Referee mode with plus and minus buttons |
| Can mistakes be fixed? | Line calls and block touches | Point and set undo |
| Can the crowd read it? | Bleachers can be far from the court | Large figures on any TV; live link for phones |
| Can it run events? | Tournaments on several courts | Pools and brackets from one dashboard |
| Sponsors? | Match days fill the hall | Strip under the score and full-screen content |
Screen questions
- Which TVs do you already have? Any TV with internet and a streaming app or HDMI input works.
- Where will the screen go? At the side of the court where both benches see it, high enough for the bleachers.
- Is there internet at that position? See the volleyball scoreboard Wi-Fi guide.
- Outdoor courts? Beach screens need outdoor-rated displays; see beach volleyball scoreboard.
Format questions
Indoor matches are usually best of five; youth and pool matches are often shorter. Ask to see the formats you use in the demo rather than assuming them. Decide who scores in each session. Optical sensors that detect points automatically are only available with Unlimited.
Running the club as well as the score
Volleyball clubs share halls and juggle training, matches and events. Each court can be set to rental, lesson or tournament mode, so records show what each hour was. The Court Status Board shows at a glance which courts are free, in play or reserved, and the Reservation Calendar handles bookings and changes. Statistics break down reservations and occupancy by sport and export to CSV for committee reports. Team names and colours on screen need Pro, Elite or Unlimited; white-label branding needs Elite or Unlimited. Sponsor content comes with every plan, as described in volleyball scoreboard sponsorship.
Plans for volleyball clubs and schools
| Plan | Courts | Price | What it means for volleyball |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 1 court, 1 sport | $44 a month or $528 a year | One main court; no team colours |
| Pro | Up to 5 | $134 a month or $1,608 a year | Team names and colours; all eight sports for shared halls |
| Elite | Up to 10 | $224 a month or $2,688 a year | Larger centres; white-label, dedicated onboarding, priority support with SLA |
| Unlimited | Per court | $1,299 per court, one-time | No term limit; optical sensors included; software updates not included |
Because league fixtures usually want team colours on screen, most volleyball clubs choose Pro even with one or two courts. Larger centres with indoor and beach courts often choose Elite. The general court scoreboard cost guide and the multi-sport scoreboard guide cover shared halls.
Red flags in a demo
Be cautious if a system ends a set at 25-24, forgets the deciding set goes to 15, cannot show the serving team, cannot display team colours, or forces a restart to correct a single rally. Each of those causes trouble in front of a full hall.
Test it the way you play
Run the demo during a training session. Take a set to 24-24, then play a deciding set to 15. Ask someone in the top row of the bleachers to read the score, and ask a parent to open the live link. If all three work, the essentials are covered.
Involve the people who will use it
The committee buys it, but volunteer scorers, coaches and the organising table use it. Bring one of each to the demo. If they find it quick, the switch will be smooth.
The first weeks
During the first few fixtures, check that screens start on time, court numbers are right and scorers are comfortable with referee mode. Note small issues and review them together after the first month.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need new screens for a volleyball scoreboard?
Usually not. A TV that reaches the internet through a streaming app or HDMI player is enough.
Does it support beach volleyball?
Yes. Beach formats use sets to 21 and a deciding set to 15.
Which plan suits a club with one main court?
Many clubs choose Pro even for one court, because it adds team names and colours.
Are optical sensors included in every plan?
No. Optical sensors are included only with Unlimited.
What does Unlimited include?
A licence per court for $1,299 once, with no term limit and optical sensors included; software updates are not included.
